How Is Coffee Decaffeinated? A Complete Guide

Many people might not see the benefits of a decaf coffee in their morning or afternoon ritual. This is especially the case for those who rely heavily on caffeination to get them through the start of yet another long day. I personally drink anywhere from 4 to 6 espresso's per day.

But hey, when your life is coffee the temptation is all too real. I will circle back to the benefits of decaf later in this article. First, let's go through some of the origins and history followed by the actual process of how coffee is decaffeinated.

History and Origins

Our Decaffeinato comes from Latin America’s first decaffeination plant located in Córdoba, Veracruz of Mexico. The operation has grown vastly over the decades and today has earned worldwide recognition for their advanced quality control procedures, leading research and development, and innovative techniques.

Mountain Water in the most literal sense is melted glacial water from Pico de Orizaba, Mexico’s highest mountain. There are many perceived benefits for the use of mountain water such as higher mineral content and the absence of government added water treatments.

The mountain water process is highly complex, but I will attempt to simplify this for the sake of easy reading. It is important to note that raw green beans are used in the decaf process.

How Coffee is Decaffeinated

We start the process by gently steaming green beans to start a physical reaction allowing the beans to breathe. On the next phase, we immerse our beans in water that is saturated with the flavour of coffee. By doing this the process of osmosis occurs in the tank and the only property left behind is the caffeine itself. You would think that the coffee would be lacking in flavour, but this is not the case. As a result of our immersion in water a balance has been created maintaining the flavour of our coffee.

At this stage we dry our beans to remove moisture as a result of the immersion stage. Once dried, we analyze our beans for their size, colour and moisture levels. Next, we move onto the cupping stage that takes place after roasting a small batch and grinding coarse. This step is like wine tasting and is conducted to test for unfavorable qualities such as rancidness and blanched flavour.

Decaf is perfect for anyone who is pregnant, has anxiety or loves an afternoon coffee but struggles with sleep. Please be mindful that when you drink decaf, there is some leftover caffeine but not enough to cause harm,
